These wrist straps are so easy. I make them for all sorts of things, not just bags. They make great key rings or zip pullers made in smaller sizes too.
You will need:
- Outer fabric – Light to medium weight fabric of your choice – You can use cotton sheeting prints, furnishing fabric weights work well, tweed or denims too.
- Medium fusible interlining – I use Vilene F220
- A ¾ inch (20mm) lobster clasp if you want to make your strap detachable
- All Purpose thread to match outer
Cutting Guide:-
Cut 1 strip 14 x 2” (36 x 5 cm) in outer fabric and one in medium weight fusible interlining
Fuse the interlining, to the wrong side of the outer fabric
Make the wrist strap
Take your wrist strap piece to the ironing board and fold in half lengthwise. Press in a crease.
Open out again and then fold the sides in to just meet the middle crease you made. Press
Fold over and press in the centre crease again, enclosing the raw edges.
Thread this through your O ring on your bag for a fixed wrist strap, or just through a lobster clasp if you want it to be detachable.
Open out the folds again just at the ends of the strap, and match raw edges with right sides are facing.
Sew a 3/8 inch (1cm) seam across the end, finger press the seam open, and then fold everything back into place again along the fold lines to create a complete circle.
Pin and topstitch close to the edge all the way around on both sides
Line the seam on the wrist strap up close to the metal ring or lobster clasp, and sew a line of stitching 1” from the ring itself through both layers of the strap, fixing the strap in place and hiding the lumpier layers where you joined the strap together.
Super quick and easy !
I hope you enjoyed making your wrist strap and you found the instructions easy to follow.
